    thank you for making this video! i’ve watched a bunch of videos on scales- and why the flats and sharps are placed where they are. i never understood it because it wasn’t clearly explained. your video cleared it up for me

    The reason why E and F are separated by a semitone is that for many centuries western music used the hexachord system. What is funny is that the reason why B and C are separated by a semitone is that they're actally E an F sung lower, starting from the low G (gamma ut) haha. Medieval people had a lot of brain capacity to waste without standardisation.

      Interesting! I was explained by a music theorist once it had to do with the structure of the keyboard, but, of course, as with so many things these systems organically developed over time and ended up not necessarily being the best way of doing it!

    I really like that even more advanced players can learn something from your videos. Love the idea of saying your scales backwards, maybe that will help with my minor scales. Thank you.

      It's a very useful skill. I am glad. I think it took me many years to think through the why and what of scales. Everyone just expects you to accept that it is the way it is.

    Oh my word, Tatiana, this has been so eye-opening! And I've watched it twice now and everytime it unlocks something else in my very tired brain. And I will be watching it over and over. Because I think I have been just trying to memorise it all, but this is helping me understand it sooo much better. And with understanding, the memorisation will be much easier😊. So I will take it one at a time, with you, because you're way of bringing it across is so good😁 Thank you for this, Tatiana. I appreciate it. ~Anthea

    I just started getting back into the flute this week, after playing it 17 years ago switching from flute to Percussion. I miss my ability to breathe while doing percussion 😂. I just had my first lesson today and started looking for a nicer flute, and I hope that learning flute will help me with breathing and cardio exercises, as well as playing such a beautiful instrument.

    Try it with both on at once. There is definitely a SLIGHTLY muted, warmer, and subtly noticable difference, and curious what a couple of these would do.

    What wonderful, imaginative advice. Thank you! As an aside, I used to play French horn (way back in the 1950s and 1960s), also oboe (and less seriously, I have taken lessons on the baritone sax, cello and violin over the years). I'm now trying to teach myself how to play the flute, and I find it to be sui generis -- an absolutely fascinating instrument because so much of 'the instrument' is actually the player. It seems the player must meet the instrument not just halfway (as it feels with violin or French horn) but "75% of the way" with only a meager 25% provided by "the instrument" itself. It's like learning (at age 80) "the secret life of the flute-playing community," beyond all imagining.

    • @TheFlutePractice
      @TheFlutePractice 21 день тому

      I absolutely love this comment! I have always felt that but it’s so interesting hearing it from someone who has played multiple instruments! It really does feel like so much of the instrument is the player. My teacher used to say: you are the instrument!

    Chunking and 'slowdowns' work. But playing ultra slow just before going to bed works best. Sometimes you have to let go of the task, and pick another task, then when you return to the original task, you may discover that the original task was not that difficult after all. Piano & Guitar

    I like breaking things down, it gives my tired, over processing brain a chance to make sense of things. It can get boring, but taking frequent breaks for me helps, walking away like I do with painting and coming back to it, it’s like my brain has been reset and I can tackle the piece with a new perspective.

    • @TheFlutePractice
      @TheFlutePractice 23 дні тому

      Yes! I think there are so many cool parallels to painting and music!
